College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering of Beijing University of Chemical Technology was formally known as the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Beijing Institute of Chemical Technology while established in 1958, and it was renamed as Institute of Mechanical Engineering in 1995, and was finally renamed as College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in March 2000.
The College currently has six department-level teaching units: Department of Mechanical Basics, Department of Process Equipment and Control Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Automation, Department of Safety Engineering, Department of Industrial Design and Training Center for Mechanical Engineering. Seven scientific research institutions: Diagnosis and Self-Recovery Engineering Research Center, Rubber and Plastic Machinery Institute, Chemical Equipment Design Institute, Chemical Equipment Technology and Engineering Center, Computer-Aided Mechanical Engineering Research Center, Special Fluid Equipment Technology Development Center and Plastic Machinery and Plastic Engineering Institute.
The College currently has a doctoral program for the first-level discipline of Dynamic Engineering and Thermophysics, a doctoral program for the second-level discipline of Mechanical Design and Theory, a master program for the first-level discipline of Safety Science and Engineering, and six master programs for the second-level disciplines of Mechanical Design and Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Chemical Process Machinery, Fluid Machinery and Engineering, Engineering Mechanics and Safety Technology and Engineering. In 2007, Chemical Process Machinery was named as a national key discipline; in 2008, Mechanical Design and Theory was named as a key discipline of Beijing Municipality; and in 2010, Safety Engineering was named as a key interdiscipline of Beijing Municipality. Four undergraduate specialties were set up, i.e. Mechanical Design, Manufacture and Automation, Process Equipment and Control Engineering, Safety Engineering, and Product Design.
The College currently has over 160 faculty members, including 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 Yangtze River Scholar, 25 professors, 49 associated professors, accounting for 66%; and 90 teachers with Ph. D. degrees, covering 70% of the total number. The College currently has 2,200 undergraduates, 480 masters, 40 engineering masters and 38 Doctors of Philosophy. The employment rates of both undergraduates and postgraduates are above 98%.
The College currently offers national exquisite course of Process Equipment Design and excellent courses of Beijing Municipality, i.e. Basics of Fluid and Powder Mechanics and Mechanical Innovation Design, with famous teachers of Beijing Municipality, a national-level and Beijing Municipality's characteristic specialty Process Equipment and Control Engineering, a Beijing Municipality-level excellent teaching team - Team of Teachers for Process Equipment and Control Engineering, and a Beijing Municipality-level experimental teaching demonstration center - Experimental Center for Mechanical Engineering Teaching.
Through decades of development, College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering has developed into an institute offering the courses of Safety Science and Engineering, Chemical Process Machinery and Equipment, and Macromolecular Materials Processing Technology and Equipment, and one of the important bases for the cultivation of mechanical talents, scientific research and technological development.
