Process Equipment and Control Engineering specialty was formerly known as Chemical Equipment and Machinery specialty, which was one of the Big Three specialties when the Beijing University of Chemical Technology was founded in 1958. Process equipment and control engineering specialty has the right to grant master's and doctor's degrees. In 2005, the major won the second prize of national teaching achievement, and was chosen as the national characteristic specialty in 2008. Beijing University of Chemical Technology was selected as the first batch of excellent engineer training program of the Ministry of Education in 2010 and won the title of "Beijing Excellent Teaching Team". In 2013, the specialty won the first prize of Beijing Education and Teaching Achievements. The specialty was selected as the first batch of national first-class professional construction qualification. As the advancement of national modernization and the development of intelligent equipment strategy, process equipment and control engineering specialty has become one of the most promising specialties in the 21st century.

The specialty possessed the big and strong teaching team, which was famous as the "double-qualified" Beijing excellent teaching team leaded by the academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Beijing Famous teaching teachers. The teaching team included an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 famous teaching teachers of Beijing, a "New Century talents" of the Ministry of Education, a Beijing Young Talents and a Beijing Excellent talent. The teaching team enjoyed a high reputation in the fields of chemical equipment, process machinery, fault diagnosis and self-healing regulation, special fluids, special seals and high-end equipment.

The specialty has many national and provincial research platforms such as the National Key Laboratory of Compressor and System Technology, the Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Chemical Safety of the Ministry of Education, the Key Laboratory of Health Monitoring and Self-Healing of Equipment in Beijing. As the leading institute, The specialty presided over a number of national “9**” projects, key basic research projects, national key research and development projects, national science and technology major projects, and National Natural Science Foundation projects. The specialty built a state-level teaching center of simulation experiment, a Beijing municipal teaching center of mechanical engineering experiment, and two state-level practice education bases (Beijing Yanshan Petrochemical Co., Ltd. and Beijing Yanhua Engineering Construction Co., Ltd.)

Facing the national development strategy of process equipment and control engineering, this specialty was characterized by the interdiscipline of mechanical engineering and control engineering. The graduate can master the basic knowledge of mathematics, natural science, mechanical engineering, process equipment and control engineering to research and design in the fields of energy, aerospace, metallurgy, light industry, pharmaceutical, and environmental protection. Graduates were well received by employers, and the rate of further study was more than 60%.
