The major of Mechanical Design, Manufacturing, and Automation originated from the Synthetic Material Molding and Processing Machinery major established by Beijing Institute of Chemical Technology in 1958. In 1977, it was divided into Plastic Machinery and Rubber Machinery majors. In 1985, it was merged into Polymer Material Processing Machinery major. In 1994, the Mechanical and Electronic Engineering major was enrolled, and the Polymer Material Processing Machinery major was renamed as Mechanical Design and Manufacturing major. In 1996, the Mechanical Design and Manufacturing major and the Mechanical and Electronic Engineering major were merged and renamed as Mechanical Engineering and Automation major. In 2013, according to the professional adjustment requirements of the Ministry of Education, the major was integrated and officially named as Mechanical Design, Manufacturing, and Automation major. In 2012, it was approved as a characteristic major in Beijing. In 2020, it was approved as a national first-class professional construction point. In 2023, it passed the engineering professional certification of the Ministry of Education.


Strong teaching staff. There are currently 64 full-time teachers in the profession: 20 professors (including researchers) and 33 associate professors (including associate researchers and senior engineers); There is currently one specially appointed professor under the Changjiang Scholar Award Program of the Ministry of Education, one academician of the Russian Academy of Engineering, one national outstanding teacher, one excellent teacher in Beijing, two provincial and ministerial level teaching masters, one outstanding youth in Beijing, three rising stars in science and technology in Beijing, two young talents in Beijing, one young teaching master in Beijing, three school level teaching masters, and one excellent teaching team in Beijing. Hire domestic and foreign experts, including multiple foreign academicians, as cooperative mentors to participate in scientific research project guidance and international course teaching.


Complete experimental conditions and advanced experimental equipment. The major has established a diversified practical teaching system including experiments, internships, and designs. It has two national level off campus practice bases for college students, Beijing University of Chemical Technology China Chemical Equipment Corporation and Beijing University of Chemical Technology Dalian Rubber and Plastic Machinery Co., Ltd., as well as one provincial and ministerial level off campus talent training base; There are national polymer science and engineering teaching and experimental centers (jointly built), China Plastic Machinery Innovation Practice Talent Training Base, Beijing Municipal Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center (Mechanical Engineering Teaching and Experimental Center), and Beijing Municipal Designated Internship Base (Mechanical Engineering Training Center).


Solid disciplinary foundation and strong research capabilities. Based on the first level discipline of Mechanical Engineering and the key discipline of Mechanical Design and Theory in Beijing, we have established the National Engineering Laboratory for Tire Design and Manufacturing Technology and one key laboratory of the Ministry of Education. The scientific research achievements have won 2 second-class national science and technology progress awards and more than 10 provincial and ministerial level science and technology achievement awards. In the past five years, we have undertaken various scientific research projects with funding exceeding 200 million yuan, including national key research and development programs and key projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Approved to build the 111 Plan Key Discipline Innovation and Intelligence Introduction Base Construction Project, vigorously promoting the construction of advanced manufacturing interdisciplinary international cooperation bases around key research directions. Carry out cooperation with countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, and Ukraine to jointly establish an advanced manufacturing interdisciplinary international cooperation base.


In terms of talent cultivation, the major has established a multidisciplinary and cross disciplinary talent cultivation system with mechanical design and manufacturing as the main body and material processing and intelligent control as the two wings. This major cultivates high-quality composite engineering and technology professionals with solid natural science and professional foundations, mechanical engineering and other basic and professional knowledge, good humanities and social science literacy, engineering awareness, practical ability, self knowledge acquisition ability, international perspective, communication and organizational management ability. They can engage in mechanical product research and development, design, manufacturing, control, project management and other high-tech fields such as aerospace, vehicle engineering, biomedicine, intelligent manufacturing, petrochemicals, etc., with comprehensive development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics and labor skills.


The major aims to cultivate top-notch innovative talents and has established an interdisciplinary team for advanced manufacturing of polymer materials (English Blue). Special attention is paid to the cultivation of students' practical abilities, innovative spirit, scientific research, and interdisciplinary innovation abilities. Through the new model of research-oriented innovative talent cultivation of scientific research team guidance and practical work on real problems, good educational effects have been achieved.


Since its establishment over 60 years ago, this major has trained a large number of outstanding graduates for the country. Their employment mainly goes to the terminal fields of modern manufacturing such as petrochemicals, aerospace, rubber and plastic machinery, and automotive electronics. A considerable number of graduates have now developed into technical backbone and management talents in various units, making outstanding contributions in their respective professional fields!
